- Pros
Easy to use. Supports monitors, projectors, and laptops. Multiple ambient light settings. Comprehensive on-screen help.
- Cons
Pricey. USB cable is too short. No automatic brightness adjustments.
- Bottom Line
With the Datacolor Spyder5Elite, you can calibrate all of your monitors, laptop screens, and projectors quickly and easily and keep them fine-tuned to ensure consistent color and gray-scale accuracy.
For photographers, graphics designers, and video editors, a well-calibrated monitor is an essential tool of the trade. Even if your display has been calibrated at the factory, it needs to be recalibrated every so often to ensure that the colors on your screen match your printed output and that all of your monitors are displaying accurate colors and gray-scale shades. Enter the Datacolor Spyder5Elite ($279), a monitor-calibration solution that uses hardware and software to analyze your desktop monitors, projectors, and laptop screens. It automatically adjusts your display's settings to provide consistent and accurate color and luminance levels and is a snap to use, but at $279 it's $110 more than our Editors' Choice, the X-Rite ColorMunki Display.

Design and Features
The Spyder5Elite consists of a colorimeter and a license for the Spyder5Elite software, which must be downloaded from Datacolor's website. The Spyder5Elite's colorimeter sports a different design than the Spyder4 PRO model, which has three legs and resembles a Klingon warship. This time around, it looks more like a hockey puck, with three shallow curves carved into its side. It has an ambient-light sensor on its face and a protective lens cover that snaps off and acts as a counterweight to keep the device flush against the screen. A tripod mount is embedded in one of the sides.
In addition to its new look, the Spyder5Elite offers a few other upgrades to its predecessor, including an enhanced optical engine that provides improved gamma response, and a smaller baffle that helps reduce the effects of ambient light. One thing that hasn't changed, unfortunately, is the length of the USB cable that connects the Spyder5Elite to your PC. As is the case with the Spyder4 PRO and the X-Rite ColorMunki colorimeters, the Spyder5Elite's 67-inch cable is a bit too short, especially if keep your PC on the floor under your desk like I do. I had to move my monitor to the edge of my desk in order for the cable to reach a USB port.
The Spyder5Elite software contains a wizard that walks you through each step of a calibration and offers extensive interactive on-screen help along the way. When you first fire up the software, you're given a choice of using the Step-by Step Assistant wizard, the Studio Match option, which helps you achieve consistency across all monitors attached to your workstation, or the Expert Console, which provides manual control over things like luminance values, gray balance, and white-point settings. The wizard offers three choices; ReCal (recalibrates the display), CheckCal (checks the accuracy of your current calibration), and FullCAL (performs a full calibration). Here, you can also select Gamma and Brightness settings, both of which offer presets and an option to enter your own value.
A full calibration takes around 5 minutes and begins with selecting your display type (Desktop, Laptop, or Projector). You are then asked to enter the manufacturer and model number and whether or not the monitor has brightness controls and Kelvin (White-Point) presets. The next screen displays the recommended Gamma, White Point, and Brightness settings for your display. In Wizard mode, the Brightness setting says Do Not Adjust because you must measure the room's ambient light first. As is the case with the Spyder4 Pro, the Spyder5Elite does not automatically adjust brightness; you'll have to do that manually using your display's function buttons until you come within 4 percent of the Brightness target. In contrast, the X-Rite ColorMunki will automatically reset your Brightness to the recommended calibrated value.
If your monitor is equipped with White-Point settings, the next screen tells you to set it to a specific value (6,500K is typical). At this point, you are instructed to place the colorimeter on the screen and click Next to begin the calibration. The software will display multiple shades of red, green, and blue colors and collect measurements for each. It will then go through a series of gray-scale measurements, from dark to light. It took 5 minutes and 10 seconds to complete my calibration in my tests, at which point the software created a profile with the new settings. Now you can name the profile (I used the monitor's model number). You can also set a Calibration Reminder for 1 or two days, 1 or 2 weeks, or between 1 and 6 months (or you can choose Never). Datacolor recommends recalibrating your monitor at least once a month.
Once the profile is saved, it is automatically activated. Now you can use the SpyderProof screen to compare 'before' and 'after' picture quality and use the SpyderTune screen to make further White Point, Gamma, or Brightness adjustments. The software offers 16 images to use for comparison or you can load your own custom images. You can compare your new profile to several industry-standard color gamuts on a CIE chart and view the monitor's CIE Color Coordinates, as well as before and after Brightness, White Point, and Gamma settings. If you have multiple monitors connected to a single PC, you can use the Studio Match utility to create optimal calibration targets that will work with each display and calibrate them all at the same time.
If you don't want to perform a full calibration, you can use the Display Analysis tool to perform individual tests for Color Saturation, White Point, Brightness and Contrast, Screen Uniformity, and Color Accuracy. Each test result can be saved and viewed in a graphical report on your PC.
Installation and Performance
Setting up the Spyder5Elite is a snap. First, download the software (Windows or Mac) from Datacolor's site. Ensure that the colorimeter (sensor) is not plugged in to your PC, then install the software. The first time you fire up the program you'll be asked to connect the Spyder5Elite to a USB port on your PC, at which point the device driver is installed. Hit Next and enter the sensor's serial number, which is located on the inside of the box, and then enter your name and email address. Once the online activation is completed (around 30 seconds), you're good to go.
I calibrated three different monitors with the Spyder5Elite using the Step-by-Step Assistant and all three benefitted from the calibration. Each monitor showed improved shadow and highlight detail and a muted brightness level that is ideal for my office lighting environment. Color quality appeared uniform across all three displays as well. Results were similar when I tested it on my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop's screen; colors appeared punched up, and highlight detail was noticeably sharper. Recalibration took around 2.5 minutes for each monitor.
Conclusion
With the Datacolor Spyder5Elite, you don't have to be an expert in color and gray-scale behavior to keep all of your displays calibrated. It uses intuitive software and a new and improved colorimeter to ensure that you get the best possible picture from your display by creating a custom profile that delivers accurate colors and luminance levels. It also offers an expert mode for users who require a calibration profile that meets professional-industry standards, and it can calibrate projectors, which is why it costs around $110 more than the Spyder4 PRO. If you can live without calibration charts, consider the X-Rite ColorMunki, our Editors' Choice. It also delivers precise monitor, laptop, and projector calibrations and offers a user-friendly interface with lots of on-screen help, and it's $110 dollars less expensive than the Spyder5Elite.
